Question about a weird looking golden retriever?

I can't find it online! My fiance called before and told me about this dog he saw, they asked the owner what it was b/c it looked like a golden, but the fur was crazy poofy! The owner said it WAS a golden, but it was from a breeder that keeps the goldens looking like they did decades ago. I am so confused, did they really look that different? He said it was 1950/1960's look, but I googled it and they look like they do today (I saw a pic of Gerald Ford's golden). He said it was bred by a guy named "tred beau d" or something... He's not sure how it is spelt exactly, that's what it sounds like I guess. Anyone know of this? I really want to see what it must've looked like!
